September 19 Meeting Notes

On Friday, September 19, NeXtGen Digest met at the Southeast YMCA, where director Ebony Young led a discussion based on motivated individuals according to their generation’s culture.  We enjoyed a tour of the facilities and learned that Ebony directs the Old Fort Branch of the YMCA as well. Ebony prepared incredible handouts for our discussion, based on a power point presentation entitled Intergenerational Communication: Creating Synergy through Understanding created by Misti Burmeister.

Significantly, Ebony suggested that by understanding the motivational factors of each generation, we would return to our jobs better able to communicate and gain the feedback we need to get work done well for our persons-served.

We ended with a few key decisions:

1. Andy Welfle, Fort Wayne Dance Collective Office Manager, has created a Google Group for online conversations:  Go Here and click “Join this Group” on the left of that screen.
2. Lettie Haver, PCNRC librarian,  will actively recruit Boomers for the next meeting to prevent a generational vacuum from growing as we start planning out how to address intergenerational issues for Northeast Indiana nonprofits. Simply put, we need feedback and buy-in to assure that any action plan we may create reflects more than one generation’s needs.
3. Nobody wants the group’s sole purpose to be conversation

Finally, if we want speakers, who do you think? Bring suggestions next time (October 17).

If you have a vision for helping Northeast Indiana nonprofits effectively handle generational issues including leadership transition, we need you to speak up and speak out about it!
